33 Coupe Having Fun 24       4/05/07

Here's another P-51 which just screams "big horsepower" when they fly by. The handling characteristics and performance make it a popular rich man's toy.

Here we have two A-10 Thunderbolts and are nicknamed "Warthogs". The cockpit and parts of the flight-control system are protected by 900 lb of titanium armor, referred to as a "titanium bathtub." The thickness of the titanium varies from 1/2" to 1 1/2" inches. Although the A-10 can carry bombs, its primary built-in weapon is the 30 mm Gatling gun which is one of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown. It fires large depleted uranium armor-piercing shells at a rate of about 3,900 rounds per minute (50 rounds per second during the first second, 70 rounds per second thereafter). This is truly a "kickass and take names" fighter jet.

This is a Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando which is a transport aircraft used in WW II. It has a wing span of 108 feet and is over 21 feet high. It has two Pratt & Whitney two-row 18-cylinder radial engines rated at 2,000 hp each. The top speed is about 270 mph and can fly up to 27,000 feet.

Now this would be a way cool toy to have. Except it would cost some big dollars to fix if it came in hard. There were about 12 different kids of R/C aircraft flying at different times of the day but this one was a real treat to watch. One other R/C aircraft that caught my eye was a scaled down F-16 with a real working jet engine that made 29 pounds of thrust. He had to throttle it back down to 25 pounds so he wouldn't violate the speed limit at this airport. And you talk about handling, that jet could corner like it was on rails. There were also two real F-16's that made a couple of flybys at about 40 feet off the deck with afterburners. That was too cool and if I was quick enough, I would have a picture of them but I was kick'n back under the shade when they arrived. Maybe next time!

This shot was taken from the car show area which was on the far end of the runway. Notice how low this guy was. Taking moving pictures with a digital camera isn't the easiest thing to do if your not use to it.
