Working With Metal Continued

I used some V-blocks to rest the pin on while I did all the weighing. This worked out really well and was pretty easy to do. However, I needed to make sure to keep all the cylinders and gold bars as matching pairs so I just used a marker for this, which is just temporary for now. Later, there will be a number stamped into the top of the cylinder for the players to use.

Once the players find the correct cylinder for the corresponding bar, they will end up with a four digit code that will open some kind of lock.

I'll be using Loctite on all the fasteners to make sure they don't come loose. Here I'm using lacquer thinner to remove any oil that might be on the threads.

I used a small paint brush to apply the thread locker which worked great. Also notice I now have three screws here.

This is the second thing I needed to address from awhile ago. I added a third screw as a counter weight because of the pin at the other end. Now the balance arm is perfectly balanced. And with all these screws on the bottom side, nobody will see them.

Working With Wood

You might be asking, what do all these items have to do with wood working? Well I'm glad you asked. I'm using them to beat-up or make the wood base look old. This scale is suppose to look like it's been around for years so I used all these things to put all kinds of dings, dents, etc. on each one.

It's hard to see here but I beat these bases up pretty good. Once I put a finish on them, they should be more visible. You can also see the bushings are installed and sticking out the correct amount. The base measures, 10" long X 5 1/4" wide X 6 1/2" high.

Painting And Staining

I'm going to use some stain on the wood, which should look better than paint. And the stain will let the dents and dings show better as well.

Here I'm in my finish room (side yard) and letting them stay outside most of the day because they smell bad.

Here is what I'll be using on the bars. First some primer and then the gold color. I also used some clear but didn't take a picture of it.
